Memorial Day Weekend 2014 Part I

As the school year winds to a close, I have been feeling an urgency to take a trip out of state and explore the world.
I have also been wanting to do a road trip with Edwina.  And I don't get to see my little sister as often as I'd like due to our crazy busy schedules.
I have been keeping track of all of Anna's funny quotes. This girl is, as my mom puts it, "A hoot!"
We drove to Rexburg on Friday afternoon. It was about four hours from Provo.  This is the picture we sent from one of Holly's guest rooms (she has TWO!) to show our mom that we arrived safely. Looking nice and travel worn.
Holly grilled chicken and potatoes and it was heavenly!
This is what happens when I take out my hair from the before seen travel hair-do

Thank you, Anna, for encouraging me to hold up a peace sign.

Here is Boo Boo, outside Holly's, on our way to explore BYU-I.  I didn't make the connection until Holly pointed out that it was LAST Memorial Day that I last visited!

HOLLY HAS A NEW OFFICE WITH HER OWN WHITEBOARD! I would LOVE that.
Awwww
In the Manwaring Center (like the Wilkie at BYU), they have a beautiful memorial to all BYU-I alumni that have lost their lives in war, from WWI to the Irag war.  I thought this was beautiful, and especially appropriate for Memorial Day weekend.

Behind, you can see the religion building!
The Little Mermaid
My first attempt at a panoramic shot with my phone!

Many a proposal have happened at the Ricks Gardens!

Anna's friend from home, Lenna, goes to BYU-I and she met up with us on campus! It was fun to see her. She is a darling girl.

This artwork reminded me of Violet and her mom who love Beatrix Potter!

We stopped and got shakes on our way in to Jackson Hole at the corner drugstore.  Call me immature, but I thought the sign was a little funny.

They have an old fashioned soda fountain!

Once we arrived in Jackson, I noticed "The Pink Garter," a little theater where my family and I came to see Shilo perform at least twenty years ago!

Of course we had to try on some cow girl hats.

I tried to exercise restraint. In fact, I even left the store without the hat.  But I came back a couple hours later and bought it! I just needed one, okay?  The cowboy hat I previously owned was from Mexico 8 years ago and I bought it way too big. I also made the mistake of letting my Men's Ensemble borrow it at our concert last week and it came back quite battered.  I am donating it to the costume shop!
Antler arc!

This food truck offered Bratwurst (that's what I got) and fried chicken between biscuits and honey (what Holly and Anna got).

There were lots of people milling around this delightful little city for the "Days of Old West."  Memorial Day is a big weekend in Wyoming.  The people here are very patriotic, which I loved.  They had live music (I was determined to listen to some on this trip), a street shoot out (we unfortunately missed that), and lots of fun shops to browse. The town reminds me so much of Park City!
Again, as I may have previously mentioned, I would like live blue grass music performed at my wedding reception.

A Scotty size bed!

Loved this.

This bathroom door at the Jackson Hole and Greater Yellowstone visitor's center made me laugh because it looks like you have to step through the wall to get in.  Like Harry Potter.

Go Highland Rams! (I'm making the ram symbol that I use with my students when I need them to be quiet. Though seemingly juvenile, it's a pretty effective tool).

Boy Scouts collect these antlers shed by elk every year and make them into things like chandeliers!

Hotwire.com allows you to get really nice hotels last minute for slammin' deals!

Apparently Anna and I have to take this shot on every new bed.

Outside our hotel!

Jared and Jill raved about a BBQ place after their last visit so we thought we should check it out. Boy are we glad we did!
Best BBQ of my entire life in this little "hole" in the wall restaurant in Victor.

A highlight of the day was attending the first rodeo of the season in Jackson Hole! My family and I have been watching  the Canadian TV show, Heartland, which takes place on a horse ranch.  My sisters and I have fallen in love with that lifestyle through the show (though it is a very familiar way of life for both my mom and dad!).

Rodeo royalty presented the flags! There was a ten year old, a teenager, and a girl in her early twenties who all won titles in their age group.

I loved looking over at the bird's nest and seeing the sea of cowboy hats.  It is a real thing! People wear cowboy hats! I just love it.
We saw team roping, big bull riding, and miniature bull riding...
...mutton chasing...

...bareback riding, barrel racing, attractive cowboy savers (watching them rope a pull is crazy!)...
...and "bull fighters" (formally known as rodeo clowns.  I had no idea the purpose of the rodeo clowns was to distract the bulls so they wouldn't trample the fallen athletes!).

These two horses were grooming each others' manes.  It was very sweet.
What an amazing day! I am realizing now just how much I love all things country.  Dad,  I just may be your daughter after all!
