I think I'll go for a walk outside...summer sun is calling my name!

Santa Barbara was the next stop on our California adventures spring break. We couldn't have ordered a more beautiful day!

An ice-cream cone and a walk on the pier...does life get any better?

Creatures great and small...

For all you Man of La Mancha fans out there...we thought "Possible Dream" was a cute name for a little boat! :-)

No high heels on the pier...you might fall through a crack!

American Idol: The Real Deal

Trivia Question: Did we enjoy our Easter treats on Sunday?

Answer: See picture below.

Kate's mom prepared a fabulous Easter dinner Sunday night on the cutest Easter plates!

After dinner, we all sat and talked. Later that evening, we even had a mini talent show.

On Monday, we had the opportunity to stop by the Newport Beach temple on our way to lunch. What a beautiful sight to see!

Check out southern California getting in to the Easter spirit!

We wanted to have lunch on the beach at the Beachcomber restaurant in Huntington Beach. Access to the restaurant, however, was through the tunnel below (unless you were willing to pay $1.00 for a 2 minute shuttle ride). I don't know what possessed me to make this decision, but all of a sudden I was by myself in the flooding tunnel with my pants rolled up, slogging through to the other side. My roommates were smart and turned back for the shuttle. I thought it would be an adventure. Halfway through, I thought, "What on earth was I thinking?" But, there was some cool artwork all along the walls of the tunnel to enjoy while passing through.

Yes, I somehow made it out the other side. And we enjoyed lunch on the beach!

Monday was spent in the mall. No seriously. 6 hours later, we left. We may have dropped in to 3-5 jewlery stores including Tiffany's and Harry Winston and tried on rings. I put a $75,000 ring on my finger. There were scary body guards swarming all over those stores. We never told them that any of us were getting married, but we never said we weren't, either...

On Tuesday, we had a once in a lifetime experience. We've been on a waiting list for a year to attend a taping of American Idol. On Sunday, we got an email saying we could come to the Tuesday dress rehearsal in the studio!! It just happened to be the week we were in California. We'd gotten the chance once before, but it was when we were teaching and couldn't leave.

It was a dream come true and was worth the hours we spent waiting to be sure we were first in line. We couldn't bring anything into the studio, and therefore the three of us spent 7 hours without our cell phones. We got to know the other Idol junkies in line and had a blast. On the way out of the studio, we saw the bachelor from this past season, Jake, and his new girlfriend Vienna. We were perhaps a little star-struck...perhaps embarrassingly so.

Things we learned from watching the Tuesday dress rehearsal of American Idol in the studio:
  • Ryan Seacrest is HOTT in person and he's very charismatic, even when the cameras are not rolling. He interacted a lot with us as a audience and made us feel like his friends. He's the kind of person I'd like to marry. Sigh. Oh, Ryan!
  • The studio looks bigger on T.V than it does in real life.
  • The studio doesn't look like the American Idol set until the fog and lights are turned on.
  • The American Idols are regular people who get runs in their stockings and laugh when a perfect stranger yells, "I love you!"
  • Kara DioGuardi is actually quite imitable, as demonstrated by "stand in" judges provided for the dress rehearsal.
  • Big Mike has EXTREMELY broad shoulders.
  • Casey James is REALLY tall.
  • Crystal Bowersox looks a lot younger in real life. It's hard to believe she's a mom!
  • In our mid to late 20's, all things American Idol still make us giddy.

A rockin' time...literally!...in California!

First of all, what California experience would be complete without an earthquake? Tessa survived her very first earthquake yesterday and is anxiously preparing for after-shocks.

Thank you, Many, for providing each of the roommates with bunny ears. Thank you, Kate, for being the only one to remember to bring them to wear on Easter.

Sunday stroll on the beach...

An unexpected wave (above) called for a re-take (below)...

Being a dorky educator, I think it's hilarious that "Paul and Tessa Always" can be abreviated, "PTA." So, I decided to write it in the sand as a surprise for Tessa and Paul. Happy always, you two.

It was so fun to stop and smell the roses...or stop and collect the seashells...on the beach. It's been awhile since I've actually done that. I take things like that for granted having grown up near the shore.

This is how I felt about being in Huntington Beach during spring break of 2009:

Not much has changed.

California Dreamin' on Such a Winter's Day...

Road trip vehicle? Check.

Camera? Check.

Seat belts? Check.

Then let's go!!

After finishing school for the week and driving from Provo to St. George, then St. George to Huntington Beach, we hurried to get beautified for the magnificent and stunning performance of, "Dream Girls" at the Ahmanson theater in Los Angeles.

We all went curly for the night!

The voice of Effie in the show was something you hear once or twice in a lifetime...

Someone didn't catch the memo about how to pose for this picture (hand on hip, Katie?).

The next morning, the easter bunn(ies) found us!! (Thanks Sister Sonne and Paul!)

Ah, the joy of road trips...
